One of the great employment fits STEPS Employment Solutions has helped with was introducing former apprentice jockey Emma O’Connell to work for Gympie salon owner Cherie Willis of Beautiful You Hair and Makeup.

When Cherie met Emma she knew straight away Emma would be a perfect fit as a mature age apprentice hairdresser in her team as her personality and attitude were excellent.

“Attitude is important because it’s a ‘people industry’ and you’ve got to be cheery and bright– there’s no quiet hairdressers are there!” Cherie said.

“There’s a lot to be gained from engaging STEPS as a business owner or manager,” STEPS Employment Consultant Shelly Wilson said.

“We are up front and honest if there is no candidate suited to the position available too; we won’t put just anyone forward.”

Cherie said her newest staff member Emma is a hard worker and been forming great connections with clients.

“She’s willing to have a go at anything,” she said.

Emma has recently been given the opportunity at the salon to provide free hair cuts for men, taking on the opportunity enthusiastically and with confidence.

“Seeing how excited she is to do cuts and letting her go and do that herself without being over her shoulder is pretty cool and I feel really proud of her,” Cherie said.

Emma had a fall some years ago during her apprenticeship as a jockey injuring her arm quite badly. While she cannot continue in that field she said there has little difficulty in her new profession.

“In the beginning [after the injury] it was really hard and I never thought I’d find a job I love as much as racing, but I have!”

“I’ve been really happy with STEPS and Shelly was great in helping me find a job and providing some tips and training along the way.”
