In April 2024, Mary enrolled in the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program at the recommendation of her workplace provider, APM.

“I had been out of the workforce for some time due to an illness,” Mary said.

“I lacked confidence and up-to-date computer skills, and I felt very overwhelmed at the idea of continuing my career. It felt like I was starting my life over again, which had me feeling quite low, so I wanted to find a group of people who were in a similar situation.”

Mary’s enthusiasm, conscientiousness and natural joy for life were quickly embraced by her Trainers and fellow participants. She quickly met learning benchmarks and decided to enrol in the Certificate III in Business (BSB30120) course.

Mary put all of her time and effort into supporting STEPS and giving back to her newfound community. She took part in the STEPS Cairns Coffee Shop and the Rosies team, who cook meals for local homeless people for Rosies – Friends on the Street.

“I had found that true sense of belonging I had been longing for,” Mary said.

“In the past, I’d felt like there was no place for me, but being part of this caring community has been lifechanging. Plus, I’ve been able to help people in need of support and show them that there’s always a place for them in the world, there’s always people who care.”

Mary had been with STEPS for nine months when the role of Customer Support Officer was advertised.

With her varied experience in the Community Services sector, coupled with her newfound confidence and skills, Mary decided to apply for the position – and she was successful!

She is now one of the first people that our STEPS Education and Training participants meet when they arrive at our STEPS Cairns sites.

The STEPS team is extremely proud of Mary and they couldn’t be happier for her and her success.

If you are interested in joining the SEE Program at one of our STEPS sites, please visit the Skills for Education and Employment webpage or call our friendly team at 1800 312 742 for more information.
